Sony Ericson Announces First Android Phone

Sony Ericsson has jumped on the Android bandwagon, and their first entry on that platform, the Xperia X10, will be showing up around April. However, there is a catch - it will at first be available only in Japan, and it will be carried by NTT DoCoMo.

As one would expect from an android phone at this point, the Xperia X10 sports a 4 inch touch screen. The resolution of the screen is above average at 480 x 854 pixels. The phone is powered by a Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon 1GHz processor, so it should be fairly snappy in its operation.

Also onboard is a 8 megapixel camera with auto focus and a LED flash - an area that the current iPhone is lacking in. The camera software will automatically detect up to 5 faces in the picture, and store it accordingly to the tagged contact.

The X10 joins other phones based on the open Android platform from search industry giant Google. It will be interesting to see what impact the Android platform will have on the reigning smartphone kings Blackberry and Apple, but one thing is certain - Android is proving itself to be a force to be reckoned with.

Android (operating system)

Android is a mobile operating system running on the Linux kernel. It was initially developed by Android Inc., a firm later purchased by Google, and lately by the Open Handset Alliance. It allows developers to write managed code in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.

The unveiling of the Android distribution on 5 November 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 47 hardware, software, and telecom companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. Google released most of the Android code under the Apache License, a free software and open source license.
