Sharp has introduced a stand-alone solar power system at the African Fair 2008, taking place in Yokohama.  The system is designed for use in off-grid areas, and is composed of Sharp's high-temperature friendly thin-film Si solar cells connected to a Li-ion battery.

The alternative energy system comes in two configurations, a 90W solar-cell module combined with a 1,024Wh Li-ion battery and  a 360W module with a respectable 4,096Wh battery.

In order to bring the systems to off-grid areas, Sharp has been working to establish new business model such as leasing, whereas currently it is a sales model.  The renewable energy system could help to bring technology to areas that are now without the power to take advantage of many advances.
